So he’s sorta-kinda-but-not-really-Death then?

His outfit is pretty cool though.

No one really knows. To me he always seems to be the embodiment of people’s doubts, personal insecurities, and fears of the unknown since those seem to be the overarching themes of season 4.

Yeah, that has been the jist of the darkness we’ve seen so far this season and he did say that he was basically created from those fears that cause darkness and twisted thoughts in people’s hearts. It’s certainly an interesting origin to have for this season since insecurities are such a natural part of being human and so that’s why he seems to see it as inevitable that everything should lead to this moment I guess.

I’ve always sort of thought it was meant to be like, despair.

The despair of not being good enough, not being strong enough, not being enough. Plus the image of people being swallowed up by a wave brings to mind the staying ‘drowning in despair’.
